The Ladies of “Mad Men”

I recently finished watching the first season of Mad Men on DVD, and of course I noticed all the lingerie the ladies wore.  In fact, I think Betty Draper wore peignoir sets more than she wore clothing in the first season (I may have been a little bit jealous, since I often wish I could just wear pajamas and nightgowns all day).  Her peignoir sets were all long, flowing, and extremely elegant.

If you’re also fascinated by the Mad Men look, here are a few items of plus size lingerie that can transport you to a more glamorous era:

  • Lacy White Bridal Peignoir: This set is trimmed with lace at the neckline, and on the hem and sleeves of the robe.  It’s available in sizes 1X-6X.
  • Susan Gown Peignoir: This soft green set is highlighted with pink flowers, and a robe that ties in a dramatic bow under the bodice.  It’s available in sizes 1X-3X.
  • Stunning Black Gown Peignoir: This peignoir features cross-dyed lace at the neckline, shoulders, and sleeves for a quiet sophistication.  It’s available in size 1X-5X.
  • Whisper Pink Peignoir Set: This set features lace cups and an exquisite all-lace robe.  It’s available in sizes 1X-3X.

The Adipositivity Project- awesome!

I was really excited to come across Adipositivity this weekend.  It’s a collection of images by artist Substantia Jones that features common situations seen through the lens of plus size people.  According to their website, this is their mission:

The Adipositivity Project aims to promote size acceptance, not by listing the merits of big people, or detailing examples of excellence (these things are easily seen all around us), but rather, through a visual display of fat physicality. The sort that’s normally unseen.

The hope is to widen definitions of physical beauty. Literally.

Of course I LOVE the cover image of a woman in her plus size lingerie in front of a graffiti-covered storefront with bars on the windows.  But I really liked a lot of the images, which focus on the plus size female form and force us to reconsider what “pretty” means.  My other favorite is this one, which features three guys in underwear standing over a woman with a cute two-piece swimsuit and rocking some retro glasses.

What do you think?  Is this fat acceptance at its best?  Bad art?  We’d love to hear what you think!

New Item: Crinolines

I hope you’ve noticed some of the 100 new items we’ve added in the past month.  In case you’re counting, that now gives AboutCurves.com the widest selection of plus size lingerie on the internet– more than any other store.  One of my favorite additions is this Red Venise Crinoline.

Crinolines are perfect for under costumes (and did you know our School Girl Costume is currently on sale?  Become a friend on Facebook or a Twitter follower if you want the coupon code!).  But they also look rocking under short plus size lingerie like chemises and babydolls.  They give the skirt some extra fullness to exaggerate your hourglass figure.

Crinolines can also be worn alone (like in the photo) with a bustier or cami top.  These crinolines are truly a plus size– they fit both our 1X and 3X models beautifully– and they’re comfortable against your skin.

If you’re looking for other colors, check out our White, Pink, and Black Venise Crinolines!

Eat Food. Not Too Much. Mostly Plants.

I’ve been reading Michael Pollan’s “In Defense of Food,” and he includes some really interesting facts and statistics, especially as related to weight and health.  His basic premise is that we have replaced real food with “foodlike substances” that aren’t nearly as good for us– as evidenced by the increase in cardiovascular problems, diabetes, etc.  These food like substances include obvious fast food (things I LOVE, like Taco Bell’s Mexican Pizza and McDonald’s french fries), but also things like apparently healthy items, like cereal with ingredients that include high fructose corn syrup and unrecognizable ingredients like trisodium phosphate (that one’s in my Total 100% Nutrition Cranberry Crunch).

It’s interesting to think about the fact that almost one hundred years after scientists discovered the three macronutrients– fat, carbohydates, and protein– society has just swung from one fad diet to the next (Low fat!  Low carb! High protein!).  And not only are we not any healthier, we weigh more, too.

One of his statistics is that fruits and vegetables have lost 30% of their nutritional value in the last fifty years, largely as a result of industrial farming, which robs the soil of necessary nutrients.  So, as a result, we have to eat 30% more food just to get the same nutrition.  No wonder we’re fatter than ever!  Plus (and this scares me a lot), the food industry actually makes more money when we have to buy more food, so it’s in their best interest in terms of profit to continue this trend.

I know that weight is a complicated issue, and that we eat for many reasons, not just nutrition.  But it’s been refreshing to read that maybe it’s not entirely our fault.  His basic recommendations are the title of this post– eat food, not too much, and mostly plants.

Nikki Blonsky Rocks More Each Day

ABC Family’s hit show “Huge” star Nikki Blonsky won’t let her weight or Hollywood’s obsession with weight get her down. In an interview with Fox 411 last week about maintaining a healthy self image, Blonsky said,

“Pick out the great things that you love about yourself. Whether it be your personality or jokes, whatever it is and focus on that rather than, ‘oh my hips are too big’ or ‘I have fat on my thighs.’” Those, according to Blonsky are, “ridiculous things” to dwell on.

I couldn’t agree more.  Hearing a celebrity speak about body image in that way is refreshing, especially since most of our plus size role models are losing weight for vanity and a paycheck instead of for health. It is a little disheartening to have role models in the entertainment industry lose weight for those reasons.  I’ve written before about Sara Rue, and how much it frustrates me to see her on national television, saying she that “not wanting to leave the house some days because I’m so uncomfortable in my skin isn’t normal.”

I’ve come to realize that no matter what size I am, or how my pants fits, I have to be happy with myself. True love comes from within no matter what size I am. Nikki Blonsky agrees:

“Beauty fades as we get older,” Blonsky explains. “We will be remembered for the important things like our personalities and the work that we’ve done and how we’ve impacted other people’s lives. Not what we look like.”
