One of the places I look to for signs of size acceptance is television. The more we have plus size role models to look up to, and real-size people on our big and little screens, the more we can accept ourselves and our bodies as we are now. That’s just one of the reasons I love Drop Dead Diva.
Drop Dead Diva is required watching around our office; all of our employees watch it, and we often talk about it during “down” moments. In fact, we just brushed up on Season 2 on DVD before the Season 3 premiere this week!
I especially love the show because it’s about a shallow wannabe model who dies in a sudden accident only to find her soul resurfacing in the body of a brilliant, plus-size and recently deceased attorney, Jane (played by Brooke Elliott). She immediately sets out to make Jane’s wardrobe fabulous, and she learns to love her body- including finding herself beautiful and putting herself out on the dating scene because she knows that men find her body beautiful.
If you’ve missed the first three seasons, I highly recommend renting them. They’re funny, touching, and a great supporter of size acceptance (another great stereotype it creates is that the skinny Deb is flighty and a little dense, while plus size Jane is smart and assertive).
A smart, assertive, plus size fashionista? This is one of the best plus size role models for size acceptance!
